A Foray into American Politics

While I'm spending a lot of time trying to grasp the complexities of South African politics, I'm still keeping up with what's going on at home. I'm concerned.

In the past few weeks, several nonprofit organizations I care about have been threatened by our new congress. These organizations rely on government funding, grants, and private donations to provide valuable services to some of America's most vulnerable communities. Please, take a few minutes to get informed, sign a petition, call your senator, and spread the word that these valuable community services are at risk. I can’t make phone calls, but the folks at home can.

Click here to stand for AmeriCorps. Each year, AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. AmeriCorps members address critical needs in communities all across America. The grant I received as an AmeriCorps member is helping to fund my study abroad experience in South Africa!

Click here to learn more and stand up for Planned Parenthood, an organization that offers far more than birth control: many people rely on Planned Parenthood for HIV testing, cancer screenings, and affordable health care.

Click here to fight for funding for NPR and PBS, which are valuable, reliable news sources for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation. Save free media!

Again, signing an internet petition really isn't enough. If you care about these organizations at all, please CALL YOUR SENATORS, LET THEM KNOW YOU CARE.
